North East Counselling Services supports all carers as part of Carers Week 2017
NECS is showing its strong support for all carers as part of Carers Week 2017 (12th to 18th June). NECS was initially founded by carers and has continued to provide services to carers in Gateshead and surrounding areas. We understand the daily pressures that carers face and the lack of understanding surrounding being a carer.
Being a carer is something we don’t think of until we become one. At any time in our lives, we may be called upon to be a carer for a family member or friend. Being a carer can be rewarding, however, at times, you can be living someone else’s life, feel neglected or feel low due to your responsibilities.
A report had been launched as part of Carers Week highlighting the contribution around 6.5 million unpaid carers make and the issues they face.
Key highlights include:
- 74% of the public in the UK feel that unpaid carers are not valued in society.
- 50% of the public in the survey, with no experience of caring, think it’s unlikely they would ever become a carer.
- 4% of the public think they are ‘very likely’ to become a carer.
- 46% worry about the cost of care and the impact it would have on their own finances.
- 43% worry about stress as a result of caring.
Key facts about Carers:
- 6.5 million carers in the UK
- 9 million expected by 2037
- 6,000 people per day take on caring responsibility
- 58% of carers are women, 42% men
- £132 billion per year of support is provided by unpaid carers
- 3 million juggle care with work

NECS work with Carers:
NECS, is a local Community Interest Company, has grown from humble beginnings founded by carers, to now being a recognised provider of counselling, having over 45 qualified counsellors delivering a wide range of therapeutic practice.
We’ve helped carers ever since we’ve been established and we’ve helped carers to come to grasp with their own feelings and issues and have helped them to find solutions to live their own life. We know you love your loved one’s but self-care is important.
Our own data shows that anxiety and stress are the top presenting issues facing carers in Gateshead and surrounding areas, followed by low mood, depression, frustration and exhaustion.
Taken from 1 year of our data, 90 clients stated that carer responsibilities had a significant impact on their own health.
Founder Marjorie Hunter said:
“I’m so proud that NECS is still providing quality counselling to carers and helping them through times of difficulty. We’ve come a long way in 10 years and like to thank all the organisations that have supported us to deliver crucial services. We’ve literally saved lives and helped carers through dark times, something that could happen to any one of us at any time. I like to give a big thank you to all carers who deliver a demanding role without any praise. As a carer myself I know that caring has an impact on your own life but remember help is at hand when times are tough. We help carers to “Live Their Life, Not Just Exist.”
The support over 10 years has been invaluable to many, one Carer in Gateshead stating:
“I wouldn’t be here now if it wasn’t for NECS. I didn’t have a life I was existing. NECS helped me realise that I had a choice, I’ve got my life back. Thank you everyone at NECS.”
NECS was initially founded to support carers but now provides services to a broad range of clients and is celebrating its 10th year. NECS has delivered free counselling on behalf of a number of organisations which it would like to thank including Gateshead Council, Newcastle Gateshead CCG, JobCentre Plus, Big Lottery and many others.
