South Tyneside Project Counselling

Objectives

South of Tyne & Wear PCT had identified a gap in the provision of counselling services in South Tyneside and invited a number of organisations including North East Counselling Services to take part in a pilot project to introduce and deliver further counselling services whilst also collecting information regarding demand and engagement of services.  Innovative ways of delivering services were encouraged.

North East Counselling Services was given the areas of Jarrow and Hebburn on which to base our services. Initially engaging with all of the GP practices in the areas, North East Counselling Services also created strong links with a wide range of local support organisations in order to reach as far into the communities as possible, aiming to offer outreach services to individuals who are often the hardest to reach.

outcomes:

In the first year of the project around 94 referrals to the service were made.  Clients were accessing counselling in GP surgeries, libraries, community centres, Council facilities, within other support organisations’ premises and where absolutely necessary, their own homes.

Feedback was excellent. Examples as follows:

“This service is invaluable and just perfect.  My counsellor has been a great help and very encouraging.” Client, South Tyneside

“Excellent Service, counsellor very easy to talk to.” Client, South Tyneside

“The project has gone very well. Particularly happy about the quick response time to referrals, and that patient can be seen in their own GP practice, where they feel comfortable.” Practice Manager, Jarrow.

“Impressed with NECS’ aim to provide services where people need them.” Manager, Primrose Community Centre.
